Did y’all know April is childhood abuse prevention month? Childhood abuse is something I rarely thought about growing up, because I am blessed to have parents that love me, care for me, and would move mountains to help me with anything. Heck, my parents wouldn’t even let me get a MySpace (way back in the day), to protect me from online bullying. Let me tell you, they are ROCKSTARS, but some children aren’t as lucky. Nearly 700,000 children are abused in the U.S annually, and 4 out of 5 of those victims are abused by their parents.

Child abuse is a tough topic. No one wants to talk about it, much less think about a child getting abused; but it does happen. Approximately five children die every day because of child abuse. One out of three girls, and one out of five boys will be sexually abused before they reach the age of eighteen. 90% of child sexual abuse victims know their abuser in some way. In the United States, more than four children die from child abuse and neglect on a daily basis. Over 70% of these children are below the age of three.

My mom is a board member at BRIDGEHAVEN Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) in our town. The staff at Bridgehaven works tirelessly to protect the children of Chambers and Liberty Counties and educate the public on child abuse. There are many centers across America much like BRIDGEHAVEN. Last year alone, CACs provided victim services to more than 330,000 children across the United States. We all have a responsibility as individuals, teachers, neighbors, and  community members to help create a healthy, and safe environment for our children. It is up to us to help stop child abuse. It is up to us to protect children. For more facts on child abuse, and information on getting involved, click here.
