I WANT TO BE A PART OF IT NEW YORK, NEW YORK 🎶

Hi dolls! I hope you’re all having a fabulous day! One thing y’all may not know about me, is that I LOVE all things Broadway. I see about four shows a year; usually three in NYC, and one or two in either Houston or DFW. Right now, I have seen 10 shows that are either still on Broadway, or shows that are touring. Below, you will find my reviews for each one; this includes the must-see shows and my favorite musical of all time!

10. Cinderella

I saw Cinderella on tour in Austin last December. I wish I could rant and rave about this one because it is a Rodgers and Hammerstein, and I LOVE their adaptation of the Nutcracker; but this show was just decent. The second act was super slow. So slow, in fact, that Marshall even fell asleep!! Unfortunately, the carriage turned back to a pumpkin before the show even started.

**Disclaimer: Nine through seven are very closely ranked. I wouldn’t say one is better than any other, but if I had to numerically rank these, this would be the order.

9. My Fair Lady

I saw My Fair Lady on my recent trip to New York. We were all super excited to see this one! The set was VERY ornate. It was aesthetically pleasing, and the singing and acting was wonderful. The one thing that bothered me about this show was the actress who played Eliza Doolittle; she was pigeon toed, and I couldn’t stop staring at her feet!! It was very strange. Other than that, it was pretty good. If you have already seen the shows below, you might want to check this one out.

8. The Lion King

I know I am going to tick some people off with this one. Everyone I have talked to has said that The Lion King was at least in their top three, if it wasn’t their favorite show. In my opinion, that is not the case. I saw this in NOLA in January of 2017, and honestly, the atmosphere ruined this one. I am used to seeing shows in NYC or Houston; and for the most part, children are NOT in the audience. I know, I know, kids are welcome, but these kids yelled and talked the whole time. Even the people (in their 30’s) in front of us were SO obnoxious. People should know better before going to a show. The kids that riddled the audience in this show deterred me from wanting to see Frozen, because I was scared they would ruin that one for me too. I guess that’s kind of what you get for a Disney Musical, but other than the OBSCENE amount of rude people, the show itself was really good. It was middle of the pack, but good.

7. Kinky Boots

I saw this in NYC in 2016, and it was so good!! The singing, acting, all of it was wonderful; but the one thing that fell short was their set. I am a sucker for a big set that changes with each scene, but other than that it was wonderful! If you have a chance to see this, go!

6. Jersey Boys

I saw this in Vegas in 2015. And, oh my gosh y’all, it was SO good!!! The songs were great, the acting was phenomenal; all around this was a great show! I would recommend going to see this with your grandparents; they would enjoy it even more than you!

5. War Paint

I cannot say enough good things about this show. It is about Helena Rubienstein and Elizabeth Arden; two makeup GODS. If you are a makeup person, or anyone who enjoys history, awesome acting, beautiful sets, or breathes oxygen, then you need to see this. My one critique for this was, at some points, I couldn’t understand Rubienstein because of the thick accent; but my mom and sister had no issues with it.

4. Wicked

Do in need to say anything else? Its Wicked, if you haven’t seen it GO!

3. Waitress

Waitress is SO good! I could see this one a hundred more times and not get sick of it! We saw this in New York in 2016. But since we have seen it, Sara Bareilles, the singer who wrote the music and lyrics played Jenna (the main character); and now, Katharine Mcphee is playing Jenna. I plan to go see it again when it comes to Fort Worth next summer. You’ll be singing these songs for days!

2. Mean Girls

The one we have all been waiting for! Y’all this was SO good!!! There were times I was crying because I was laughing so hard. This is, by far, the best musical I have seen this year. The set was AWESOME!!! And the acting was overwhelmingly hilarious. The whole thing was phenomenal. Go see this ASAP! I cannot say that enough: GO SEE IT!!

1. Hello Dolly

Last, but definitely not least, is Hello Dolly. Out of all the plays and musicals I have seen in my life, this one is by far the best one. We got to see this when the fabulous Bette Midler was Dolly. She had us laughing so hard I couldn’t contain myself! This four-time Tony winner is one for the books! Midler put her own personal spin on every song and every scene, and it was fabulous. Midler has now passed on the role of Bernadette Peters, and I’m sure it is still just as funny. I would love to go see this again. It has truly given a new meaning to musical theater!
