Fun fact about me: golf is actually my favorite sport. I know some people think it’s “boring” to watch, but I LOVE it! Today, I kicked off Memorial Day a little early, and went out to The Fort Worth Invitational A.K.A. the Colonial. We got to see all the ‘frat’ stars today, like Rickie Fowler, Smylie Kaufman, and Jordan Spieth. Honestly, I love them and think they are all great. If you didn’t see their Bakers Bay Spring Break videos, look them up, they’re wonderful! So, with all of the golf going on in FW this weekend, I decided to do a little golf for dummies today.
So I will break this down into 3 categories: clubs, terminology, and scoring.
CLUBS:
Driver: The big dog! This is what you hit when you are in the tee box (well, most of the time). This is the club that hits the ball the farthest.
Putter: The most important club! Putting can make or break you. You use this when you are on the green or the fringe (close to the hole).
Iron: These clubs have the numbers 2-9 on them. These are what you hit with from the fairway. The lower the number, the farther it will go; the higher the number, the shorter it’ll go.
Wedge: My least favorite club! You use this club when you need to hit a short shot or when you’re in a bunker.
Hybrid: This is a mix between a driver and an iron.
TERMINOLOGY:
Front Nine: Holes 1-9
Back Nine: Holes 10-18
Tee Box: Where you hit your first shot on every hole. There is a marker in the tee box from which you hit.
The Green: This is where the flag is. This is where you putt the ball into the hole.
The Fringe: The small space barely outside the green.
Water hazard: Places such as a small lake or pond on the hole, where your ball could go in and not come out.
Sand trap: The sand on the course, usually by the green.
Whiff: When you attempt to hit a ball, and go over the top of it (lol this is me).
Stroke: How many times you hit the ball for each hole.
Hook: When you are hitting the ball and the ball goes left without you aiming that way.
Slice: When you are hitting the ball and the ball goes right without you aiming that way.
SCORING:
Par: The number of strokes you are supposed to take to complete the hole. Each hole will either be a par 3, 4, or 5.
Bogey: One stroke over par.
Double Bogey: Two Strokes over par.
Birdie: One stroke under par.
Eagle: Two strokes under par .
Hole In One: You hit the ball in the hole in one shot.
Well friends, I hope this helps! If you aren’t a golfer, I encourage you to get out there and try! Heck, even go to Top Golf or play putt putt golf! It’s a fun thing that anyone at any age can learn how to play.
